“Algebra” by MacLane and Birkhoff was the first abstract algebra book I bought and I loved it! It wasn’t the first abstract algebra book I read. This book presents modern algebra from first principles and is accessible to undergraduates or graduates. It combines standard materials and necessary. The Basic Graduate Year includes some good applications to algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory, for example. Sign up using Email and Password. Chapter IIIand some field and vector space theory birkhogf.
Theoretically, less-prepared students and more-prepared students birkkhoff not only survive but also get from this something substantial. For the social scientist whose mathematical studies have reached through the calculus, this book can confidently be urged as the thing to study next. Logic suggests the standard groups, rings, fields, modules, vector spaces, etc. Post as a guest Name.
Chapter 11 includes a completely revised introduction to Boolean algebra and lattice theory. I understand from professors who were students at Harvard that MacLane himself would use the book-in all it’s versions, from the first mimeographed drafts in the early ‘s to the 3rd edition he used in macclane last teaching days in the mid’s-for both undergraduate and graduate courses in algebra depending on the strength of the students, which would vary enormously from class to class.
A very striking feature of the book is its broad point of view. Some combination of the approaches of the above books ought to make an excellent undergraduate course. We must not risk them never learning it.
Preliminary Thoughts In both undergraduate courses and graduate courses students’ abilities and background are quite variable; that much has not changed in the past few decades. These responsibilities were in effect combined in our activity. This book also does not match a clear unorthodox vision of algbra the subject should be taught, unlike, say, Aluffi or Adkins. The longer chapters are his; the shorter ones mine.
Indeed, I find his maflane quite agreeable.
Then and later we took part in the flow of new ideas from discovery to use and to present to students. Modern algebra prospered mightily in the decadesfrom functional analysis to algebraic geometry – not to mention our own respective researches on lattices and on categories.
The classical algebra is nicely embedded in bifkhoff structure, as are also applications to other fields of thought.
I mentioned flaws of a few books in my answer. We hope that the present book will prove an adequate reference for those wishing to apply the basic concepts of modern algebra to other branches of mathematics, physics, and statistics. I once began writing a massive annotated bibliography of basic mathematics through standard graduate workbut after spending ten pages on algebra texts, I gave up on the maclahe. After explaining the conceptual content of the classical theory of equations, our book tried to bring out the connections of newer algebraic concepts with geometry and analysis, connections that had indeed inspired many of these concepts in the first place.
Linear algebra is first, because students have the best intuition there; ring theory is next, because the examples and applications are nicer there than in groups and the quotient construction is easier.
You do not define a group as a groupoid with one object, at albebra not in an introductory course. That may overstate things, since my friend probably knows more mathematicians than students who got fed up and left.

Mac Lane had had much more teaching experience than I, and I think the popularity of our book owes more to him than to me. There is also contact with the field of mathematical logic in the chapter on the algebra of classes and with the ideas of topology xlgebra the proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra.
Anyway, let me say a bit about my thinking for how this book would work for either audience. He received the nation’s highest award for scientific achievement, the National Medal of Science, in You mention Herstein and Vinberg, which are good; Artin or Gallian also work, for example. Email Required, but never mzclane.

Those are perhaps worth substantial time, even if they are somewhat too odd for most courses. Birkhoff and Mac Lane also want to teach their students to prove things, of course. It is a great supplementary text, however. That the basic objects of groups and rings are presented early on and come back to several times, rather than spending one-hundred pages only talking about groups, then changing to only talking about rings, should also help students see how algebraic structures are related; it also makes the beginning easier, and provides an opportunity for students to save themselves if they fall behind early on.
Probably the best way to appreciate the vitality and growth of mathematics today is to study modern algebra. Surely, people appreciate the extant ones e. Garrett Birkhoff published more than papers and supervised more than 50 Ph. Nevertheless, it is still a book well worth reading.
Also, the author writes very well indeed. But I’d sure keep one on reserve in the library for my students to browse. This is when students should come face-to-face with having to understand universality, or else.
In preparing the revised edition we have added several important topics equations of stable type, dual spaces, the projective group, the Jordan and rational canonical forms for matrices, etc. As Mac Lane did years ago, it is best to supplement the text with something easier, something intended for undergraduates. Rotman may be a good primary text.
