Thus if the silver rabbit on c4 and the silver horse on c2 adimaa away, voluntarily or by being dislodged, the silver rabbit on c3 will be captured.
Learn to play Arimaa The rules are simple and intuitive.

The key to progress is to make strong threats around two different traps. This simultaneous clarity and depth is why I love Arimaa. The hostage camel keeps Silver’s elephant in the southwest, but it can move between c4, d3, and c2, needing only to finish each turn on one of those squares.
Beginners often incline more toward pushing than pulling, but note that a push dules ineffectual here.
Arimaa Game Rules
The c3 rabbit strengthens Silver’s trap control, but its main purpose is to blockade the trap so that no gold piece can move through it. However, even newbies are able to describe what is happening in a game just by looking at the board.
Homeward pulling has its place, but should perhaps not riles one’s main strategy. Diagonals have no place in the rules of Arimaa. Friendly pieces may not be dislodged. A recurring theme in Arimaa strategy is elephant mobility.
The main object of the game is to move a rabbit of one’s own color onto the home rank of the ruless, which is known as a goal. For now, Gold’s elephant is tying up Silver’s elephant and camel both, leaving Gold’s camel unopposed as the strongest free piece.
Each player is given a set of pieces that match Chess in number, but not in utility. With the gold elephant stuck, the gold camel is the only piece that could dislodge a silver horse, but Silver can easily stop such an intrusion in the west.
At right, note that the silver elephant is not placed directly opposite the gold elephant.
A phalanx blocks the gold camel from g7, thus the f7 horse is currently safe even though it is Silver’s only direct defender of the f6 trap. Attackers may even end up blocking each other. After the pieces are placed on the board, the players rjles turns, starting with Gold. Try to make capture threats around multiple traps. A arima or move consists of one to four steps. Other than that, the simplest capture defense is to station one’s elephant next to a trap square.
Arimaa/Playing The Game
It is a game I never get tired of no matter how much I play nearly games arrimaa 5 years. Written by Hans Bodlaender.
This is not the only alignment for an effective hostage, but the free pieces are always key, and there is limited time to maneuver them. A piece which is frozen may not be moved by its owner.
If you leave a piece in a trap square, it can be captured or framed if you haven’t adequately protected the trap. The a3 gold horse is less blocked, but still poorly placed, as it is very far from both silver dogs. Diagram 1 shows one possible initial placement. With so much now at stake in the northwest, the deadlock has tightened considerably.
On the next move, the horse could be pushed into the trap in two steps, leaving another two steps to reestablish the phalanx. On 13g of this gameGold held the silver camel hostage and had two strong gold pieces on the other wing, yet could not force a capture in c3 or f3. For example, Silver to move could step the silver horse from f2 to f3, losing the horse, and still pull the gold rabbit from f1 to f2 as part of the horse’s move.
Arimaa is an abstract strategy game, but for me it has just enough of a theme and flavor to it that keeps me engaged. If d3 and d2 were unoccupied, the gold elephant could move to d3 and pull the silver camel to d2, perhaps resulting in a strong central hostage.
Whenever you lose, observe how your opponent outmaneuvered you. At right game Gold holds a double hostage of the silver camel and horse. For example, the gold elephant on d3 could not simultaneously push the silver rabbit on d2 to e2 and pull the silver rabbit from c3 to d3.
Since even an elephant can only push one piece at a time, an elephant can sometimes be blockaded so that it has nowhere to go. If one does get full control of an away trap, several quick captures may be possible, since an enemy trap usually has plenty of enemy pieces nearby. In rlues endgamesuch a hostage tied up the three strongest remaining pieces.
Silver could try moving northwest pieces to the southeast, threatening gold pieces in f3 while also making room for the silver camel to dislodge the f7 horse. They are also frozen and can be pushed and pulled by all other pieces save enemy rabbits.
