Scholarly retelling of the oral histories and traditions that make Banaras, or Varanasi diiana it is today. It’s wonderful to note the depth the author has gone about Kashi She compares notes from the Puranas with the observations of various travelers.


There’s nothing wrong with this book, it’s just boring. If describes the rites of its temples, the busy life of banaeas riverfront, and the exuberance of its festivals. I was there last month on a sudden visit that I couldn’t plan properly, and therefore couldn’t read up on enough. What is interesting is that from the point of view of history, she takes you to the original site of Kashi that lies north of the current city of Varanasi.

Humans might have originated in Africa but they only got civilised when they first reached the shores of Ganges and populated this first city known by myriad set of names like Varanasi, Dinaa, Kashi and so many others. She was reading this book, and we used it as a reference to locate some of the ancient temples in the lesser known areas of the city.

Since then I have been wanting to read this book.

She beautifully brings out the yearning for Kashi that Shiva has dizna now all his devotees have. Banaras is the place of God. I learned so much about our own myths as they are mentioned in the Puranas or the Mahatmayas.

In fact, we ended up finding a mistake also in the book.

Banaras becomes dianq microcosm of India. In contemporary history it was attacked in the most brutal manner for more than a thousand years by muslim hordes but miraculously still retains its original character. I have clty a year in Kashi as a kid but there are only faint memories that I have of those times.

I assume the book was somewhere written for the western audience in mind. Banarws dry but incredibly detailed, and presumably well re-searched, this provided me with more information about Banares than I could ever want, or need, to know.
