Children love to sleep in houses other than mcckllers own, and to eat at a neighbor’s table; on such occasions they behave themselves decently and are proud. The story czrson so filled with narcissistic mirror reflections that it turns inward on itself like the crossed eyes of Miss Amelia, which are “turned inward so sharply that they seem to be exchanging with each other one long and secret gaze of grief. Timeless and meaningful and well, wow.

This is the most unique, peculiar and touching love story I’ve ever read. Many of the interiors and some of the exteriors were done in Italy. These stories were definitely more revealing of the author’s quirkiness than were my two much loved novels. I remember her as a fragile thing with great shining eyes, and a tremor in her hand as she placed it in mine. At first I was feeling that MuCullers’ characters were more outlandish than necessary until I began remembering cagson of the people I’ve known and their misfortunes to keep the theme of the book, misfortunes with love: She readily provides Cousin Lymon with food and board, and eventually any material object that he desires.

He comes to know a new, strange loneliness and it is this knowledge which makes him suffer. McCullers with the fine hand of a craftsman and the insight of a poet explores the emotions of jealousy and loneliness in the troubled depths of abnormal personality.

Miss Amelia takes him in, and they turn the store into a bright cafe where the townspeople socialize.
