The File Transfer Access and Management protocol (FTAM), an ISO application protocol, offers file transfer services between client (initiator). This paper assumes knowledge of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) [RFC] and the File Transfer, Access, and Management Protocol (FTAM) [ISO,2,3,4. FTAM is designed to help users access files on diverse systems that use compatible FTAM implementations. It is similar to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and NFS.

Once the session is established, file transfer can take place. Users can manipulate files down to the record level, which is how FTAM stores files. If the server crashes, the request simply goes away and the client makes another request.
Protocoll has worked well as a way to bring mainframe information systems into distributed environments, but FTAM has not caught on otherwise. It also provides access to files and management of files on diverse systems. In these respects, it strives to be a universal file system. Access file stores both locally and remotely, making FTAM a distributed file access protocol more similar to Gopher in this regard than to FTP Integrate management of both local and remote file stores, including the ability to protovol both files and protoclo attributes Access file stores on different kinds of machines that have different types of file systems Transfer files both synchronously and asynchronously The FTAM model defines the architecture of a hierarchical virtual file store in terms of file structure, file attributes, and the kinds of operations that can be performed on files and their attributes.
File-Transfer Access and Management (FTAM)
The FTAM standard does not specify the actual user interface for file access and management, simply the underlying architecture of prtocol system.
The FTAM file system hides the differences between different vendor systems.
This simplifies recovery after the crash. Files are transferred between systems by first establishing a connection-oriented session. The FTAM protovol defines the architecture of a hierarchical virtual file store in terms of file structure, file attributes, and the kinds of operations that can be performed on files and their attributes.
Many of the implementations so far have failed to interoperate with one another. In a stateless system, such as NFS, requests are made independently of one another in a connectionless manner. Data is interpreted as records and FTAM provides the virtual filestore capabilities that store record-oriented structured files.

Vendors are left free to create their own user interfaces to FTAM file systems or use existing interfaces for their vendor-specific file systems. In a stateful system, both systems must be aware that one or the other has crashed so they can restore the states and prevent data corruption.
FTAM has worked well as a way to bring mainframe information systems into distributed environments. There are advantages to stateless operation. Download the prtoocol version of the Encyclopedia of Networking, 2nd edition In this respect, FTAM has some relational database features. FTAM specifies document types as files with straight binary information or text files in which each line is terminated with a carriage return. Contribute to this site Electronic licensing info.
