If you know a little about Torah and Talmud, this will make you into a scholar. Heschel clearly saw himself as some ultimate combination of the “Ishmaelian” and “Akiban” schools, the rational scholar and thinker and also the champion of the mystical and hdavenly “emotional” side of Judaism.
Heavenly Torah is thus a major addition to the library of Religious Humanism in our time.

Aug 13, Jake rated it really liked it Shelves: His seminal works were all written in Ehavenly, and perhaps his primary goals were to fight Jewish assimilation and strengthen modern Jewish identity in America, rather than to appeal to the Israeli public.
Gordon Tucker and Leonard Levin have done a superb job of assembling, editing, abridging, and translating a huge, not quite-finished manuscript.
As if permission had torh granted for each person to build an altar for himself. Yishmael was the “rationalist”, a champion of straightforward and, well, rational thinking; Akiva was the mystic who embraced the ineffable and championed the supernatural. This book comes close to being exactly that.
Was TMS an embodiment of his English theological writings, or a scholarly study of rabbinic literature? There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
